HM Revenue and Customs or HMRC is an independent (not subordinated to any ministry) department of the United Kingdom government responsible for collecting taxes, paying some forms of government support and managing the regulation of the regulatory regime, including setting the minimum wage and issuing national insurance numbers .
The Authority was formed from the merger of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs Services, which came into effect on 18 April 2005. The department’s logo is St. Edward’s Crown enclosed in a circle.
